TRIVIA

As you can easily see, I am not adept at the use of the computer. What I want to write about is the weekly trivia game which we play at the Burlap Barrel. 4 or more teams of 4 or fess compete for free drinks. We enjoy it for the reasonably priced drinks and the not too bad meal which is free of charge. The participants volunteer to call 2o questions . I volunteered yesterday and here is a small sample of the trivia that I presented:
When smoked, what fish becomes lox?
Name the 7th US president? ( Hint, a famous general)
What is the last name of the Beverly Hillbillies?
What is the last name of the late Anna Nichol Smith's daughter ?
Freud divided self into ego, super ego and what?
Now I have a small confession to make. As of September 1st, new local laws do not permit smoking in all sorts of places ( Like bars) . The first Monday we all smoked, as usual and the second hand smoke was overpowering.
Yesterday the bar owner was present. A nice little area outside with tables and chairs was made available. We were told that if caught the bar would be subject to terrible penalties. Everyone conformed with the new law. Presto ! the air inside was pure . We got home feeling better and certainly smelling better. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves even with the smoking restriction. Business did not seem to have been affected.
I still hate the nanny state. Business rights and individual rights are being trampled on. My confession, I kinda liked the pure air .

Well.. I missed the president and the Anna Nicole question - so not too bad. I never did know my presidents, less so by order!
Glad you made it back from your trip safely, and that you are not letting the new smoking restrictions keep you from enjoying the time out.

Dear Rummy,

You are absolutely right: business and individual rights are being trampled. Tobacco smoke will be eliminated by order of the government! However it and its partisans see no ill at Bushy’s blundering invasion of Iraq and consequential chaos which you, your kids, grand kids and so on will pay for. I’d quite happily settle for cigarette smoke.

By the way, never end a sentence with a preposition.

Abrazos,

John:
That old saw about prepositions is a superstition fomented by English teachers of a bygone era. You might want to check up on some of the famous speaches by W. Churchill, master of the English language. He would certainly disagree with you.

Your hatred of Bush makes me think that you don't see what is actually happening in the world today. I see it as a crusade that must be fought today and which we must win at all costs. Bush understands this and is going ahead in spite of the opinion of majorities who mindlessly appose him. It will cost our kids and grandkids but is a price which must be payed. It has nothing whatsoever to do with cigarette smoke.

Best regards to you and Aurora

Dearest Rummy,
What a fine reply, I could not have expected less!
Dear Winston was a fine general, statesman and orator but no grammarian and prone to the same bungle as your dear self.
Winston was an exceptional world figure in a volatile word along with FDR and Stalin! What an incongruous triumvirate! Some histories attribute dear Winston as the architect of present-day Iraq. I haven’t been able to confirm this but that it was the English in the early 1920’s after the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire is so.
And dear Rummy, I do not hate Bushy, indeed I hate no one, I simply realize as slowly the better part of the U S of A’s population realizes that your dear Bushy is a totally dysfunctional ass. No disrespect inferred nor intended. Some folks are just so…
I sadly do see what is happening and am cognizant of the fact that if it weren’t for Bushy the situation might be more containable. There were no Al-Qaeda, Taliban nor various and sundry terrorists in Iraq before Mr. W invaded with his mega-show of “Shock and Awe!” Bush has destabilized the entire Middle East with his “weapons of mass destruction” deception. He’s empowered (Bush’s favorite word) the Iranians who thanks to your dear president are becoming a major middle east influence. And as you suggest, another crusade might be required. How many have there been and has any ever resolved any thing? I don’t believe so. The result is further division and hatred.
So, do tell me how we’re going to win. With your dear Bushy out of the White House some intelligencia might return to said place and this potentially explosive situation might be resolved by a combination of political and military intervention. But we need brains and some one that can speak English properly in that disinfected place.
Many abrazos,

El Ruco

Just for the record, cigarettes will never be a thing of the past. The taxes placed on this product alone bring in a staggering amount of revenue for the government.

Dear Ruco,
You have changed the subject and continue to spew venom about President Bush. He may not be an orator of the caliber of the late great General Macarthur ( SP) but then, nobody ever was or will be.
He has never given a speech or
statement that I didn't completely understand.
He has made some errors perhaps but fortunately, he carries on with his agenda in spite of the lousy press and
opinions of ill informed.

You might want to look up the
Balfour declaration to clarify your hazy understnding of the Middle East situation.

Best wishes to you and yours

Dear Rummy,

I don’t spew venom I but speak the truth. I assume that you like Bushy pay “no attention” to the polls but them things indicate that your “ill informed” represent better that 50% of Americans. And probably 90% of the rest of the world.

I thank you for the history lesson but I may have failed it miserably. I looked up the Balfour Declaration and found two and went over them both. For the life of me I found no reference to the Ottoman Empire or environs. So I fumbled around and stumbled on the Armistice of Mudros, Sykes – Picot Agreement, Treaty of Sevres, Treaty of Lausanne and then the League of Nations comes into the picture. They all appear to have much to do with the partition and the English seem to have been the winners back then.

Abrazos to you both,

El Ruco
