Why do people riot ? Perhaps the Haitians who seem to be starving have a pretty good excuse.
Most American riots seem strange. They often take place during the week when all good people are a t work. I must assume that the rioters are all unemployed. Sometimes their causes seem a little less than pressing. Do the recent disturbances in San Francisco seem to be of pressing concern? Do you suppose that the rioters even know where Tibet is ?
Global warming seems to have stalled during the last few years. Hmm- Do you suppose that the warming theory has been exaggerated ? My theory is that it is a self correcting situation.More warmth creates more clouds which reflect the suns rays back into space and hence cool things down.

I certainly agree with your global warming thoughts. But people with white teeth are idiots? Not sure about that one....
I can only hope that your global warming theory has some merit.
The scientific term for the earth's reflection is called "albeto". So I don't think scientists are unaware of this.
Actually, I DO believe that the planet takes care of itself. Whether they are natural cycles or not.
However, I am not certain that this planet's natually corrective cycles really have man's existence in mind whether during their fluctuations, a couple hundred or million species don't "make it". So as long as the cloud cycle kicks in before the temperature goes up 5-10 degrees, we *might* be ok.
Oh, and don't forget about all the other things that are not self correcting, such as sequestered carbon that is released from soils as temerature increases, and reduced ice at the poles which reduces this self-same "albeto".
Ok, and not to limit my topics.
Right along with the rioting, I have always wondered about the quality of jurors we get. Most of us really do have jobs, and most of our jobs will only pay for very short stints. So WHO ARE these people who can be jurors for the 1 to 6 month trials? Certainly not regular employed people.
Wow, well at least we can agree on the white teeth issue.
I'm pretty sure that the term "global warming" is almost entirely passe at this point, having been replaced by "global climate change."
Tom is correct across the board about albedo and the self-regulating cycles our little planet lives under. Unfortunately, you have to look at the planet as a closed system, which it is, and consider this:
every living thing contains carbon. That carbon is processed and eventually sequestered (in wood, soil, oil deposits, peat bogs, and so on) where it will remain until it is released through natural processes. Every time we burn a carbon-based fuel, we release that carbon into the atmosphere, thus increasing the thickness of the heat-trapping carbon (not to mention methane and various other) gases that prevent the release of heat.
I'm not saying that we are doomed by this exacerbated process, but I can't help but wonder if we are digging ourselves into a hole that will take many generations to get out of.
And riots? in America? Please. As much as I think we should be paying attention to the human rights abuses of China, I really think it is time for America to stop policing the rest of the world. We have enough problems right here.
p.s. if you think global warming is not a problem, check out this interesting article:

Who told Fancypants that the earth is a closed system ? We do get ouside influence from the sun and moon
dang, you got me on that one!
okay, so let's just say that materials-wise it is closed. Energy wise, it is wiiiiide open. We would be nothing without the sun.
