                            MASSACRES

The recent CT school massacre was horrifying, disgusting , infutiatng, disquieting, and thought provoking. It was truly a big news story. However, for the last 5 or 6 days that seems to be all we hear about on radio TV and newspapers. By now the story has been told ad nauseum. I don't want to hear about it anymore.

As massacres go, this was no big deal. Traffic fatalities in the US average about 100 per day. 3000 dead in the world trade center. 6,000,000 dead in the holocast. Over 50,000 dead in the Bangladesh tsunami. Nagasaki and Hiroshima come to mind. The horrors of war dwarf most others. The list could go on and on.

Meanwhile, other newsworthy items are hidden from us. Terrible things are occurring  in the middle east. The US is about to go over the so called fiscal cliff. Hillary claims to have suffered  a concussion and so avoids an embarrassing congressional hearing.

Come on Fox, CNN, abc, nbc, and cbs. Lets let that old story go and start giving us the new and important stories as they happen.

                           A TROUBLING STORY

Without too much fanfare a reputable source tells us that children are arriving at puberty at a much younger age, about 9 or ten years old. Not too any years ago this happened at 12 or 14 or even older in some cases. What do you suppose has caused this ?

Many possibilities present themselves. For example, can we blame early exposure to salacious material at an early age ? We can blame TV for that. Maybe early sex education in school can contribute. The same reputable source says that 10% of children in the sixth grade have engaged in sexual activity. Does this not bother you ? It does me.

Has something changed in our eating habits ? Are the numerous inoculations having unintended consequences ? How about the fluoride in our water supply. We are constantly exposed to radio magnetic energy. Hmmm---

Our reputable source fails to tell us if this is a world wide phenomena or is it just us. Maybe it is only in the industrial world.

Can this be a cause of the pervasive promiscuity or perhaps the rising prevalence of homosexualiy ? With no evidence to prove it, I suspect it may be a contributing factor

                           ALL ABOUT FLIES

I feel certain that you are all interested in flies which I mentioned briefly in a previous blog. I made them sound better than they actually are with their great eyesight and lightening like  reflexes. Each eye has about 4000 lenses and they pretty much see about 360 degrees at all times.

It is  hard to believe that there are over 30,000 species of flies. The most common one is the ordinary house fly, the one that plagues us all summer long. We kill them if we can but they keep coming. The female, so we are told lays thousands of eggs in her brief two week life span. Her little wings beat at about 200 times per second. She, and her male counterpart defecate about every five minutes. They like to eat mostly disgusting things and then land on us or our food with their disgusting, sticky little feet. Thus they are great carriers of infections and and illnesses.

For the determined fly killer, it is important to know that they take off backwards. Knowing this,we should  strike from the rear, using a fly swatter. Newspapers and such are much less effective. We have on order an electronic  swatter which electrocutes all types of flying bugs on contact. I can hardly wait to try it out.

P. S.   Our fly swatter just arrived. We have loaded it with 2 AAA batteries. Alas, the fly season is over and suddenly, they are gone.

                              MISCELANEOUS

No overriding subjects have presented themselves to your lethargic scribe. I few minor thoughts, not worthy of a blog, follow.

Introspection : One might examine oneself from time to time. How is one perceived by others ?  Is the perception accurate ? Probably not . One knows things about oneself that no one else will ever know. In like manner our perception of others will always be incomplete.

Flies : Is it possible that we have more flies in the last few years than previously ? We are well equipped with fly swatters and we slaughter them in great numbers. But they keep coming . They are hard to kill. Their excellent eyesight and lightening reflexes are a  challenge for the determined swatter.

Omega 3 fish oil : We religiously take our fish oil each day. Recent studies indicate that this may not be as beneficial  as the fish oil people tell us.

Organic foods : We march off to the local food  market and carefully select the organic products. They must be better since they are much more expensive. Now we are being told that they really are not . I am almost convinced. Milk may be an exception. Ordinary milk goes bad in a week or so. The organic lasts about a month. The milk people have been fiddling with our milk for some time now. I remember, a long time ago, when milk went bad in a couple of days.

                             I STILL HATE ROYALTY

I have garnered more anti-royalty  stuff which I am pleased to share with my readers.
The retard , Bonnie Prince Charlie's deceased ex-wife , Lady Diana, canonized  by the press, adored by all (except your scribe ) has awakened my suspicious nature. Why, you might ask, is prince Harry's DNA a closely guarded secret. He looks suspiciously like the sainted Diana's horse trainer. Is this naught but idle speculation ?

More about Prince Harry of the suspicious parentage : The dashing prince has been caught with his pants literally down. One cannot behave badly in this age of camera phones with impunity. During a wild drunken orgy he appeared in many photos in the altogether, embracing several unidentified women in his luxury suite in Las Vegas.

His reputation should be in tatters. Will the Brits forgive him ? Probably. This modern age has a way of forgiving and forgetting such things. We Americans are not much better. For example, we all adore Bill Clinton (Except  your scribe).

                        THE EGG WARS

About 45 years ago the food gestapo informed us that eggs were really bad for you. The gullible began to throw away the yolk ,  just eating the white ( ugh ).The real believers
would order egg white omelets ( Brack ).

The egg lovers struck back about ten years ago. Eggs once again became the near perfect food. We all gleefully began to eat eggs, yolk and all, as many per day as we desired. How delicious they are either fried, soft boiled,  hard boiled ( Especially good in salads and sandwich spreads ), poached, and even raw in smoothies. We are warned by the anti egg party that we must beware of raw eggs lest something horrid may happen to us (baloney). How about French toast or egg nog (yum).

The food gestapo, in desperation, just brought out the big guns. The latest salvo : Eating eggs is just as damaging to the cardiovascular system as smoking. This might scare the living daylights out of the large anti cigarette lobby so they joyfully have joined the fray.

Can the egg survive this latest onslaught ? Egg lovers unite! We join the fight to save the humble egg.

                           MISCELLANEOUS

The last word about the move to the new house - We have finally gotten rid of all the 35 years accumulation of junk. The old house is all spruced up and (we hope ) ready for a quick sale.

One last word about the Olympics -  I wonder why NBC thinks we are all fascinated with volleyball of all types with endless playoffs, and water polo ( who cares ) , all made horrid by the disgusting Bob Costos.

Politics - I can hardly believe what I am about to write. I think Obama will win a second term ! As expected , he will get 95% of the black vote. Now he seems to be reeling in the Latino vote as well. For unknown reasons he also gets a substantial percentage of the Jewish vote. Our liberal media and the labor unions are piling it on , overwhelming the best efforts of the Fox network and talk radio. The welfare and nanny state have all but taken over. It is hard for the conservatives to make a case for self reliance.

60 minuits have done it again - This bunch spent 30 minutes telling us that sugar is poisonous. Do you believe this ?  I don't

Getting used to my new computer, TV, and house

We are overwhelmed by all the new stuff. The I Mac is a beauty with more capabilities than than I will ever learn to use. The enormous TV has all the bells and whistles which
Xfinity has promised us. The beautiful new house is also filled with  the high tec stuff associated with modern living. I wonder how to work the fancy micro wave oven and the other regular oven. Perhaps, someday, we will master all this stuff.

Meanwhile, we keep hoping to enjoy the Olympic games which NBC manages to make into a big bore. For some years now they have been foisting this repulsive announcer on us. I can't think of his name right at this moment. Why, I wonder, do they have such so called sporting events such as synchronized swimming . Soccer, baseball, tennis and golf all have tournaments else where. It seems that many minor sports are a big waste of time. The vulgarly large US delegation with the stupid, french looking berets and chinese made uniforms is an emberassement. Sorry to say I cannot find the spellcheck.

BEGINNING TO MOVE

It will probably be 3/4 weeks before we actually move to our new home. The logistics are daunting. However, the first baby steps are being taken. It is surprising how much junk one can accumulate over 35 years. Piles of cassettes (No one has the equipment to play these anymore ).
Books , books, and more books we no longer want (Any volunteers to take 28 volumes of encyclopedias circa 1962 ). Piles of phonograph records ( What is a phonograph ? some of the younger generation might ask ), many liqueur bottles ( We never touch the stuff ) , an assortment of board games , not played in many years nor will be played by us ever again, an excess of water and wine glasses. The list goes on and on.
All that is the easy stuff. Old furniture that won't fit in the new digs becomes a problem. We have a huge excess of pictures and lamps. Just thinking of all this is giving me a head ache and an upset stomach.
I wonder how one moves one's computer, telephone and TV. Maybe comcast will take care of that. Ouch ! I better stop here. My stomach just started feeling funny.

THIS IS SHOCKING

We can hardly believe our good fortune. We have been rattling about for years in our over sized house. It seemed like a good idea to find something smaller.

About 75 yards from our house a smaller one story ( we don't need stairs anymore ) house was about to be put on the market. It is a completely redone modernized place, quite nice. So we bought it.

The idea of moving is daunting. We have many years of accumulated stuff plus an excess of furniture. Friends and family have first shot at the leftovers. The rest gets given away, sold or thrown out. Maybe a garage sale ( I hate those things)

We should close the deal in a two or three weeks and will start seriously moving shortly afterwards. I think we will be able to keep our same telephone number. Everyone will be advised of our change of address.

THIS IS SHOCKING

THINGS I DON'T BELIEVE

1) One must drink 8 glasses of water a day.
Why would one need or want 1 gallon of water per day ? I lived the first 80 years without drinking any water at all. My kidneys and bladder tell me one or two glasses should suffice.
2) 5,000,000 children in the US go to bed hungry every night.
I have never heard of anything more ridiculous. Who do you suppose counted those hungry children ? Where are the parents ? A box of macaroni and cheese costs about one buck. Add water or milk and, if possible, a bit of butter and it will serve 4. Maybe not the worlds best diet but it will fill an empty stomach. I suspect the nanny state is behind this absurdity.
3) The spotted owl is an endangered specie.
The timber industry in the Pacific NW was almost destroyed by imposed restriction on their operations. It happens that the spotted owl , often under a different name, lives in great profusion up and down the Pacific coast.
The snail darter is supposed to be threatened also. Why would anyone care ?
4)The average salary of CEO's of publicly traded companies is $9,300,000. 244 times the average pay.
Certainly, the paychecks of huge companies might be that large and perhaps more. There are thousands of small cap.corporations with more modest salaries. My guess, maybe 2,000,000
as an average.

This only scratches the surface of those things I don't believe. We may continue with this theme at a later date.

VERY OLD MEMORY

When I take my early morning walk I like to clear my febrile mind of all thoughts and let whatever appears come to the surface. Like magic, Mr Gallager and Mr. Sheen appeared. The names were vaguely familiar, but who were they ? Through the magic of the internet I was able to refresh my memory. They were the most famous vaudeville act of the 1920s. Since I was not yet born, I never saw their act and strangely, I can nor imagine where I had ever heard of them.Yet, somehow there they were, two names, stuck in some cranny of my mind.

I quizzed everyone I could find, even very old folks, and no one in my purview had ever heard of this most famous comedy team. I wonder if any of my readers know of them. I am betting that no one has. Too bad , they really were funny. I wonder whatever happened to vaydeville. I miss it alot even though I never did see a vaudeville show.

A RARE BOOK FIND

As I browsed in the dusty back rooms of the used book store I was surprised to find an old slim volume, long ago out of print, by B.H. Obama. I was astonished to discover that it was a cook book. Who knew that Mr. Obama was an epicure ? I fully intend to try many of the unusual recipes. Herewith, a partial list of the dishes. Upon request I will be glad to send actual recipes
of any or all of them.

Beagle with cream cheese
Pup tarts
Chicken poodle soup
Spaghetti and mutt balls
Eggs rover easy
Baked a Lassie
Beagle bites
Mellon collie
Cool whippet
Chow Chow mein

ANOTHER PLANET /

Not so. There was nearly conclusive evidence that we were on planet Earth. The place was crawling with humanoids and most of them spoke English. Final piece of evidence was almost conclusive. We knew that our Southwest Airline flight was supposed to take us to the left coast of the US to a strange place called San Diego.

Upon deplaning we were greeted by blasts of cold air. We were whisked from the airport on well paved streets without any potholes. That was a welcome change from our beloved Houston.
Our genial hosts, Bob and Julia, regaled us with food , drink and entertainment for 5 days. Although their lives were completely disrupted, they kept up a cheerful demeanor. We went to many fine restaurants and met a number of their interesting friends. Unexpectedly Gina ( Niece and husband Carlos) appeared on the scene. Bridge, upwords and poker were the games of choice.

Back to the other planet idea : The peculiar SD flora, all unknown here in Texas, Seem to exist without benefit of water. We understand that in never rains there. ( It rained twice while we were there )

Here we are, home again with our familiar plants and potholes

MEGABUCKS

Jan fell under the spell of the drumbeat of propaganda. She wanted to have 640 million dollars. I patiently explained that the cash option and taxes would reduce the take to perhaps a mere 200 million. She allowed that this would be quite sufficient for her immediate needs. I offered to flush a dollar bill down the toilet. Not good enough. So I hied myself to the nearest convenient store and squandered a dollar.

This morning we checked the winning number. You can imagine our dismay and disappointment when we came up empty handed. This confirms my favorite aphorism ( my own invention ) : "Ones chances of winning the lottery are the same whether or not one buys a ticket"

TIME FOR A NEW RACE RIOT /

A seventeen year old black lad ( six foot rwo-170 lbs. athlete with a record of misbehavior in school ) was shot to death by a white ( half Hispanic ) volunteer armed guard. Was it unprovoked murder or justified self defense?

It was a dark night and a person disguised by a hood ( hence "The Hoodies" ) was skulking about this crime ridden area. Here it becomes unclear. The guard suffered a broken nose and lacerations . There was an altercation. Who started it ? Did the guard fire in self defense ?

The story has not yet been told. The black community has donned hoods and the usual suspects are making hate filled speeches. The president added fuel to the explosive situation by giving a racist speech. ( If I had a son he would look like this )

Where might this end ? Are we to have a good old fashion race riot ? Will there be a fair trial or will someone collect the $ 10,000 reward offered by the black panthers ?( Are they still around ) to assassinate the so called perp ?

THE WALL SREET ACCUPIERS

Writing a good blog is not easy. Picking a subject that is interesting to your scribe and potential readers is the hardest part. Half of the blogs that I write end up unpublished and in the garbage.

A pretty good subject popped up a few days ago. There were pictures of that piece of excretion, George Clooney being led away in cuffs and under arrest with a satisfied grin on his face. What he thought he was doing with the Wall Street protesters I can not imagine. How I would have loved to wipe that rictus off his bewhiskered visage.

I have often wondered what happens to those arrested for disturbing the peace, resisting arrest or rioting and often injuring police. I suspect that they are booked, pay a minimum fine and are released. Perhaps they wouldn't be so self satisfied if they spent a week or so in the pokey.

Do you suppose that these miscreants will be with us forever ? They have been around now foe about 6 months. I don't believe that they are accomplishing anything but they are managing to disgust most right thinking people.

I HAD A DREAM

Wouldn't it be fun , for a change, to have a political nominating convention that wasn't pre-ordained by the powers that be ( whoever that mysterious group might be ). They call it a brokered convention. Nothing is more silly or boring than these exercises in futility. It was not always this way. It need not be this way now.

My dream (very unlikely but not impossible ) has Romney, Santorum, Gingrich,, and even Paul all claiming delegates, thus keeping anyone from getting the necessary majority. The rules are, after the first ballot, the delegates are released from the commitment to their candidate and become free to change their vote. At this point, anyone can be proposed and seconded.

I propose Cris Christy. The second ballot would show lots of support for him. Still no majority? This would be exciting and Christy support would grow. Still another ballot. Christy wins ! Now we have a winning candidate. Marco Rubio for VP and we have an unbeatable combination.

A footnote : Christy, of late , has been all over TV and talk radio. Is this a coincidence ? Something is afoot.

GOOD NEWS ?

Jan has been working at Advanced Office Systems for 30 years as of March 30th. For 30 years she has never been late and almost never missed a day of work. She has been a most loyal and dependable employee even though the company has been notably stingy in its salaries.

She has been thinking of retiring for over a year and yesterday advised that she is leaving on March the 30th. Good for her. She deserves some free time at last.

On the ither hand, my indolent life is coming to an end. Under her stern guidance I will no longer be allowed to spend countless hours watching TV or playing with my computer. She will find tasks for me on a daily basis. Her life of leisure begins. Mine ends.

IRRITATED ( AGAIN )

I guess I am easily irritated. Here are few recent items that really got my goat.It has mostly to do with TV which I like most of the time.

Item #1 - Some poor besotted has been singer, noted mostly as an item for the tabloids in the last years, offed herself apparently with a drug overdose. I really don't care. However, since her demise all I am able to get on my beloved TV is more and more about this woman. I am so irritated by this that I am actually avoiding some of my favorite programs. Enough already. She really isn't important.

Item #2 - Constant adds on radio and TV are urging us to get Teddy bears ( Named after Theodore Roosevelt but that is another story ) for our loved ones. Since when, I ask myself, have bears become romantic symbols ? We are assured that said loved ones will be thrilled and will do nice things for us. They even have a 4 1/2 foot bear for only $99.oo. I jokingly suggested to Jan that I was getting one for her. She was not amused.

Item 3 - Why is it that when we get a commercial on one channel every other channel has a commercial at the same time ?Switching channels is therefore a waste of time. We thank whatever gods may be, for our Tivo.

Item 4 - I am tired of political adds and debates and telephone political calls. They tend to make me not want to vote for whoever they are touting.

THE PEACE CORPS

For many years the US has been funding the Peace Corps. The object seems to be to improve the lives of poor people throughout the world, even countries not friendly towards us. We even have volunteers in China. How benevolent we are. Doesn't this make you feel good ?

A few days ago the Peace Corps announced that, for safety reasons, it was withdrawing its volunteers from Honduras. This is a tiny impoverished South American country with a population of scarcely 6,000,000 souls. They withdrew an astonishing 128 volunteers. There are a large number of poor countries in Africa, Asia and South America. We send an indeterminate number of volunteers to almost all of them.

Although it was not possible for me to determine the number of countries and the number of volunteers, I deduced that the numbers are certainly in the many thousands. From a statistic buried in an article on the inter net, I was able to make an educated guess that the program costs about $ 500,000,000. This is chump change by Washington standards. What a bargain, we are told.

Has this bought us much good will ? Much of the world hates us. This is a stupid, wasteful program. It seems like an excellent place to start cutting the federal deficit . Lets get rid of the Peace corps. That would make me feel good.

A SHORT HISTORY OF LEE

Born 1923

Lee lived in Mexico until 1966.He lived with our Mother until her death in 1966. He took his modest inheritance and went to Italy where he lived for 9 or ten years until he ran out of money. He returned to St.Louis ad lived there until about 1993, He then moved to Houston where he lived until his death in 2003,

For all his numerous faults and shortcomings, he was a charmer. He made friends easily but was fickle and discarded them quickly.. But he was charming. I enjoyed his company and find that I miss him.

Offsetting good qualities: he was funny, thoughtful and generous.Truly a strange and interesting person.

LEE ME AND DAD

Yesterday I underwent for the fourth time what my urologist likes to call a procedure, his peculiar term for an operation. I hope that this will be the last one and I will finally be cured oF my long standing malady. Unfortunately, DR.Limm arrived for the procedure one hour late which left me in the tiny pre-op cubicle for several hours. With nothing to do, I allowed my mind to drift back in time and I recalled the following.

Dad was a tall dashing handsome man, a firm but just disciplinarian. Lee was a rebellious, indolent, disobedient liar. On several occasions he told me that he hated our father. I, on the other hand, was an excellent child, looking at all times for parental approval.

I recall the following as if it were yesterday. I was about 15 years old and Lee a year or two older. Lee to Dad : "Have you heard this joke about Confusious ? Confusious say, it unsanitary to cook carrot and pea in same pot". Our Dad, nor known as an uproarious laugher, laughed uproariously. Not to be outdone I said- "Dad, have your heaRD this Confusious joke? Confusious say, he who break wind in church must sit in own pew." Dad's brow contracted Ina frown.
". That's utterly disgusting" he shouted.

I have wondered if there was some lesson to be learned from this. If so, I have not been able to find it. What I do know is that my feelings were hurt. Even today, 70 years later, when I think of this I have a tinge of sorrow.
